BRIGHTON (BIBON MERCY)

Well, it's time again for me to write a little tribute to our Little Miss Brighton (she calls herself "Bibon Mercy"). The smallest of the Murphy Clan, this remarkable child has the ability to bring me to tears with her willfulness and spirit. When I say "bring me to tears" I mean in the bad way as often as the good way, and I mean it with all the love and dedication of a mother who knows what it is like to be so taken with a child's beauty and thoughtfulness one moment, and so frustrated with their stubborn determination the next, that she doesn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Brighton is bright (not only counts to 10, but understands she is actually counting something), spirited, confident, and stubborn as a mule. She loves to dance with her sister in the living room; she is a big fan of "Big Girls Don't Cry" by the Four Seasons - and she knows all of the words to the chorus. When she is dancing she does it with complete and utter abandon - throwing her little fists in the air and bopping her entire body to the music. She thrusts one shoulder in the air and then the other - in perfect time with the music. She mimics her sister constantly, repeating phrases and vocal inflections and following her around the house like a puppy (let's hope Miss Bella sets a good example). But it is Max she wants when she is looking for somebody to sit quietly and snuggle her. She also enjoys hitting golf balls or baseballs off the Tee with her daddy and her brother, and will follow them outside for these activities, often to Max's chagrin.

She lovingly refers to her brother and sister as "My Max" and "My Bella." When she is looking for them, she does not ask "where is Max?" but "where is MY Max?" with all of the possessiveness and love that the phrase implies. She loves to run - usually away from whomever is trying to get her attention - and entice them to follow. She chatters constantly, asking questions about where we are going or what we did yesterday. She walks into the room and asks, "what you DO'IN Momma?" or "where you DOE-IN (going)?" Whenever we are walking down the stairs or out the door ahead of her, she yells, "wait de me" or "I'm bomin (coming)!"

She can turn the tears on and off like no child I have ever seen. I simply have to tell her that she is going to go to time out or up to her room if she doesn't stop crying, and she can stop the tears immediately (not that she always does). She also enjoys guilting her working mother - telling me about how she was "dieing (crying)" at school or that she "miss my momma" so "I die (cry)."

She still climbs in bed with Mommy and Daddy every night, usually early morning. We hear her coming -her little feet hitting the floor as she groggily makes her way to our bed. She then stands to the side of either one of us and whispers "momma, I here" or "daddy, I here." We then grab her little body and put her in-between us - and she will roll from one to the other for the rest of the night. As much as I sometimes long to have more of the bed to myself (she also snuggles up to us so tightly that she literally pushes us off the bed), when she throws her little arm around my neck and pulls me into her when she's sleeping, I get choked up thinking about the day when she will no longer stumble to our room for some nighttime snuggles.

She loves spending time with her family, and is definitely happiest when we are all together and engaged with each other. Watching T.V. simply will not do when there is a tickle game or game of hide-and-seek to be played.

Brighton loves to snuggle, and when you pick her up for a "huggie" she wraps her arms AND her legs around you in a way that melts all the stress of the day and makes you want to hold her like that forever. I know that it is only a blip in time before I can no longer pick her up and get a full-body hug in that way, so I vow to never refuse this little cherub a "huggie," regardless of how dirty my hands are or how busy I am - she is our baby and she won't stay little for long.

Busiest weekend EVER - part III

Connor spent the night with us on Saturday and we woke up Sunday morning, ate a breakfast of champions and took off to the park for some fun in the sun. As you can see, the tire swing was a big hit - with all four kids enjoying the ride.

Busiest Weekend EVER - Part II

Grace's 2nd Birthday Party on Saturday night was fantastic! The Curnows (Paul and Erin) rented the kids a HUGE bouncy castle to play in, and the kids ALL had a ball. Additionally, the boys (Connor, Max and Connor's cousin Cody) found the greatest toy ever - a piece of culvert to climb in and roll around. The boys had a great time getting in the tube and rolling around the construction site first, and then the Curnow's very large backyard.

I love this picture of Brighton, Max and Max's buddy Riley in the castle.
Here are Connor, Cody (on top) and Max in their toy.
Brighton even climbed in for a quick ride - although it was going so slow that Max had to take to his hand for entertainment.
Brighton and counsin Carter took over the bouncy castle for awhile and had a ball - just the two of them - without the big kids crampin' their style.

Busiest Weekend EVER, Part I

We are so blessed to have so much family and so many friends. There are some weekends, however, when life just feels downright crazy. Last weekend was one of those. Ali, Joe, Connor and Carter were in town for Connor's birthday and Gracie's birthday over the weekend and we kicked off the festivities with a trip to Chuck E. Cheese's on Friday - right after Max's 6:30 T-Ball game. We spent a few hours at Chuck's and then were off to Grandpa Chuck and Grandma Cindy's (Joe's parents) for cake, ice cream and presents that night.
Bedtime: 9:30.
Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on Saturday morning, we were at the baseball park at 8:30 for the Boulder-Arrowhead Little League "Parade of Athletes" and pancake feed. It was a loooooong "parade" with about 30 teams being announced player by player. The grub was good, however, and Max made us proud.

Here are Bella and Brighton enjoying their pancakes while their brother participates in the "parade." (I keep putting parade in quotes because it was really more of a "standing-around and waiting" sort of thing).

As we were leaving Max stopped suddenly to check out a "rolly-polly potatoe bug." Brighton was fascinated as well.

Saturday continued with a Reese Waldron's Hula-Girl birthday party at 11:00 am, Bella's dance pictures at 12:30, Max's T-Ball pictures at 2:30, and Gracie Curnow's Birthday Party at 3:00. Yeah - it was nuts.
Here are the girls and their favorite Build-a-Bear's all decked out in their hula finest. Bella was thrilled that even her bear (actually a dog named Huggie) received a hula costume.
Here she, right before we ran out of the party to get her dressed for dance pictures. What a day.

Mother's Day

I had a great Mother's Day this year with my wonderful family. The kids were very generous with their time and talents this year: Miss Bella made me a beautiful picture frame with a picture of her and Max in it and made me a fantastic card, in an envelope and wrapped in paper which she'd also lovingly colored; Max made me a fabulous candle with dried flowers pushed into the gel-like wax and a card in which he'd written "I love my momma;" Brighton also made me a home-made card with her wonderful "scribbles" all over the inside.

We followed tradition and went to the country club for brunch with Grandma Barbi, but broke tradition and did the zoo instead of the nursery after brunch. The thought of buying flowers and having to care for them in the garage because of this most unpredictable spring deterred us from our annual Mother's Day flower buying extravaganza.

The zoo was amazing, and all because of the peacocks - they were out in full-force and they were mating. At least that is what I assume they were doing since the males were all strutting their stuff - as you can see - and the females were running from them as if their lives were depended on it. The males were fighting over their gals - literally flying up into the air and diving for each other. Scared the bejesus out of me, but the kids found it quite entertaining.
How blessed we are with our beautiful, healthy and happy children.
Brighton had a ball riding the chipmunk after our walk through the wildlife - what a bug.

Montana Women's Run 09

Bella and I have been walking the Montana Women's Run together for five years now, with Brighton joining us the last three. It is such a great tradition that we've started, and one I hope continues for years to come. I would love it if my girls came home to walk (or run) the Women's Run every Mother's Day, whether at college or raising their own families. We'll see.
This year Katie, Reece and Sy joined us for the walk. Katie and I had a great time catching up and the girls (even Brighton) enjoyed crossing the finish line together. Reese and Bella are pictures above, with our three little ladies pictured below. Brighton loved her run with the big girls.

What a great day!

Baseball in Montana.

Baseball season is continuing with umbrellas, hats, sweatshirts and winter coats. While his family is freezing, Max is enjoying the game and improving every week. If only the weather would cooperate. . .
